eTrade and eBusiness Systems

Back in the 1980's we had X400. A global private network that operated over X25. Using this network standards evolved for EDI (Electronic Data Interchange). EDI was the basis of electronic trading (etrade) and has been with us for 30 years. X400 is still a current technology and many large corporations still make use of its services to exchange data electronically, but, the internet has superseded X400 in both performance and cost of ownership.

We can develop software that will enable two or more companies to exchange information using the Internet as a medium. This information may be purchase orders, quotations, invoices or other important information. This is eTrade, an essential component of eBusiness.

eTrade only works if the computer systems at both companies understand the information being exchanged. For this reason we have standards that describe the format of the information to be exchanged, but, there are many such standards some better than others. Because of this we often find ourselves developing one system to communicate with supplier A, and then a different system to communicate with supplier B. This is not good.

GEN have for many years been involved in eBusiness Systems and eTrade and deal with these issues on a daily basis. We've seen the problems and in 2001 we initiated the design and development project that is GENActive.

GENActive is a fully functional eBusiness system that can communicate in MANY different languages and as such can talk to many different systems. Using GENActive as the mediator you can exchange information with just about every EDI and eTrading system. GENActive calls this Transitional Conversation Management (TCM).

But GENActive goes much further, as the system also provides integrated eProcurement, ePayment, eInvoicing and eBilling, eCommerce and ebanking services fully integrated within its core. You can take advantage of this core and control it in many different ways, from using a web browser to sending it special email's with instructions. By having so many control interfaces, GENActive is assured to be able to interface quickly and easily with *ANY* system that should require e-Trading.

For example, You can talk to GENActive via HTTP/HTTPS, Email, XML, FTP, and API. We can guarantee that ANY computer system can be integrated with GENActive to provide any one or more of the services provided.

eTrading also has operational requirements, especially when you start e-invoicing and e-payments because the Internet (unlike X400) is a public network and as such it is not in any way secure. GENActive has addressed this by employing powerful encryption technology to ensure that your transactions remain secure at all costs.

The illustration above shows a basic sales/purchase from stock conducted via GENActive. In the first case the supplier generates a quotation on the system which provides the information to the customer. The customer wishes to purchase, so the supplier generates an invoice which GENActive provides to the customer. In this case, the customer is NOT a GENActive subscriber and decides to send a CHEQUE. (Customers who are GENActive subscribers can pay invoices instantly at the click of a button). GENActive keeps both supplier and customer fully informed on the progress of the customers payment. Upon clearance, the supplier ships the goods and GENActive again keeps the customer informed automatically.
